Vaccines for Puppies & Dogs

Here at Fort Garry Veterinary Hospital we believe that vaccines give your cherished furry friends protection. From the moment your pet joins your family you are responsible for them. Vaccinations play a key role in this, helping to protect them from diseases. Some vaccines are required by law, while others are optional. Our veterinarians can help you decide what other vaccines your particular pet needs.

Which vaccines are required by law?

Vaccines required by law are called core vaccines. These are mandatory because of the severity of the disease your pet may develop without them. Core vaccines are also required because of the possibility for transmission between other animals is high. Rabies, distemper/parvovirus (DHPP), and Bordetella are the three compulsory vaccines for your puppies and dogs.

Does my pet need other vaccines even if they aren’t required by law?

Yes. Non-core vaccines even though they are not mandatory may also benefit your loyal companion. Depending on your pet’s lifestyle and environment, they may be exposed to certain parasites and diseases if not vaccinated. Non-core vaccinations include leptospirosis, rattlesnake, Lyme and influenza. Say, for instance, you live in an area that is riddled with ticks our veterinarians would recommend your pet be vaccinated against Lyme disease. We are here to assist you in protecting your pets and deciding which non-core vaccines may benefit them.

When should my puppy or dog be vaccinated?

Our veterinarians will create a vaccination schedule for your furry pal. We begin puppy vaccinations between 6 and 8 weeks old. The first round of vaccinations should be carried out every three weeks until your puppy is 4 months old.

Adult dogs should receive booster shots once they have completed their last round of puppy injections. Booster shots are necessary because each vaccine lasts for a certain amount of time. Rabies vaccinations are effective for three years, Bordetella is effective for 6-12 months and DHPP, leptospirosis, Lyme disease and canine influenza are effective for one year.

Will my pet experience any side effects after they are vaccinated?

Yes, it is possible for some pets to experience some mild side effects. Not to worry though as these side effects only last up to 48 hours. Some possible side effects are loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea and swelling at the injection site. Our veterinarians will answer any concerns you have about side effects.
